Use of bicycle helmets in childhood and adolescence

Use of bicycle helmets in childhood and adolescence
Safety Committee and Child Injury Prevention
Over 70% of children aged between 5 and 14 years ride bicycles. This activity, although it is a popular means of transportation and a sport recommended, is not without risks.

In Spain, according to the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) , approximately 20% of deaths in road accidents between 10 and 14 years were bicycle users. The head injuries were the leading cause of death.

The bike helmet can prevent or reduce the risk of serious head injury, even when the cause of the accident is a collision with a car. The helmet's protective capability is based on some energy absorbing and distributing the peak energy of the blow over a larger area, and increase the transfer time.

Through studies performed, it is estimated that the proper use of bicycle helmet reduces the risk of head and brain injury by 63-88%, and the risk of death is 26% lower. Despite this, the vast majority of bicycle users, including children, do not use the helmet, or used inappropriately.

As recognized by the Law 43/1999 of 25 November 1999 on the adaptation of the rules of the road for cycling ( BOE 283 of November 26, 1999 ), "The drivers and, where appropriate, Bicycle occupants will be required to use a helmet on intercity roads under the conditions established by regulation. "This regulation may be waived only in very long ascending ramps, where extreme heat or if the rider certifies medical reasons.

For urban roads, although not mandatory helmet use, from organizations such as the DGT is recommended to use in any kind of way.
Safety Committee Recommendations and prevention of childhood injuries
  • All children and adolescents should wear a helmet every time moving bicycle.
  • Parents and other adults must wear a helmet whenever they use the bike.
  • Parents should set an example in promoting safe behavior for their children, and explain why you need to protect your head.
  • The helmet should be worn properly. For this you must:
Be approved by the competent bodies. Standard requirements specify that the helmet has to be durable, lightweight, well ventilated, easy to remove and replace, should allow use with glasses and not interfere with the ability to hear traffic noise. It must also provide a viewing angle of at least 105 ° left and right, an angle of 25 ° up and 40 ° down
.
Being in perfect condition: You must replace the helmet if you have had a stroke, if it is damaged or has been outgrown. We also recommend that, although apparently in perfect condition, is changed at least every five years or when the manufacturer recommends.

Having the right size: Helmets come in various sizes depending on the manufacturer. The right size should match the size of head circumference. Helmets usually bring extra pillows or an adjustment ring to fit well on any head.

Be secure: It should fit comfortably and securely on top of the head, covering the top of the forehead (one or two fingers above the eyebrows). Likewise the side straps and chin, as the buckle must be properly adjusted so that it is snug and comfortable. The helmet should not move from side to side or front to back.
In the case of small children riding as passengers:

Addition to using a properly fitted helmet should ride in an extra seat approved.
According to the Rules of the road , the driver of the bike must be of age and the passenger does not have more than seven years, and must travel in an approved seat. The bicycle trailers that appear to be safer to transport children are still not covered by Spanish regulations.

For safe transport of children on the bike, they should at least be over 1 year old, the age at which possess sufficient muscle strength to control the mobility of the head in the event of having to brake suddenly, even with the additional weight of the helmet.

Parents and children should know all the essentials about the safe use of the bicycle.
Wearing a helmet is only one aspect of bicycle safety. Both parents and children should know and take other safety measures such as:
  • use appropriate clothing,
  • wear a red rear reflector on the bike,
  • wear reflective clothing at night and a front white light and rear red and
  • be familiar with the rules of the road on public roads.

The role of the pediatrician
There is evidence of the effectiveness of health advice on prevention of injuries and accidents in children. General pediatricians should:
  • Encourage parents to encourage helmet use when their children begin to ride a tricycle or wheeled toy vehicle or.
  • Inform parents and children about the importance of wearing a helmet when riding a bicycle, and the danger in the event of non-use. This information is especially important for teenagers, since they are the most resistant to wear.
  • Encourage parents and other adults with the helmet too, to set an example.
  • Participate in community-wide campaigns to promote bicycle helmet use in childhood and adolescence.
Conclusions
The bicycle helmet is one of the few passive safety measures with cyclists (both children and adults) in their power to minimize the damage in a fall.

If helmet use in adulthood is important, its placement in children and adolescents is essential. These ages are key to instill the importance of cycling always protected and to protect the head of those least likely to see the danger.

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS OF URBAN CYCLIST

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS OF URBAN CYCLIST
  •     Keep your bike always ready
  •     Learn to master
  •     Respect the rules
  •     Become a view
  •     Indicates your maneuvers
  •     Adjust the speed
  •     Look at the drivers not cars
  •     Be careful with opening doors
  •     Respect pedestrians
  •     Anticipate
STEP 1.
Your greatest security is in you. With caution and care will avoid dangerous situations. Be predictable. Drive in a straight line with at least one hand on the handlebars. Always start from the basis that the rider is always the biggest loser, so always think well what you do, even count to twenty before you make a decision may have consequences.
STEP 2.
Watch for children, stray dogs, the driver's hand on the window, etc.. Often remain unpredictable.
STEP 3.
Bring documentation that identifies you, a phone number to call in case of accident.
STEP 4.
Use helmet can save your life in an accident or fall. Carry it, once you get used to him not shall separate you.
STEP 5.
Use your hands to indicate left or right turns. The manner in which the user of the bike turns signals from other vehicles sharing the road is as follows:
STEP 6.
It provides the route that you will follow. Avoid the most dangerous routes. Try to use the largest possible range of cycling trails.
Step 7.
Good maintenance of your bicycle: brakes, steering, wheels and lights, will provide greater security. If you're going out with the bike route leads: inflating pump, patches, camera, brake cable and basic tools. You can also bring some energy food to prevent "slut".
STEP 8.
Meets the traffic regulations, especially those that pose a risk to your safety: Stop, yield, red lights, etc..
STEP 9.
When you ride on pedestrian areas do at a similar rate to that of the pedestrians, taking into account the priority of the pedestrian. Similarly, when driving on the road, and when pedestrians on the sidewalk, pay attention to them for a possible appearance on the road.
STEP 10.
Flows through the center of your lane, then you have every right. If you did very stuck right motorists tend to ignore. Your bike is a vehicle like any other with the same rights to use the road.
STEP 11.
Always indicates your movements to other vehicles. The bicycle, as any vehicle, must comply with the rules of the road and signal properly and in good time turns.
STEP 12.
Become visible. When riding at night is basically done see by all means possible: lights, reflective clothing on both bike and body, etc..
STEP 13.
On rainy days: Beware of puddles. They are the perfect hideaway for a pothole or sinkhole, covered by water. And of course watch and paint the curves of the road, are an ice rink.
Imagen Bici y circulación lluvia
STEP 14.
Pay special care when driving on your lane when you pass to the height of a deviation to the right. Many drivers do not signal their turning maneuver to the right, you off at the pass and create dangerous situations.
STEP 15.
Do not trust car maneuvers until the last moment and have about brakes especially when riding up to them. Note that, unfortunately, but you can be right, to a car accident with a bicycle takes forever to lose.
STEP 16.
In the city: beware of car doors just parked, can open them without thinking that anyone can get at that moment.
STEP 17.
Do you ride too close to parked cars. The cars driving on your left if you do not need to provide space for a car that stands to your right open your door.
STEP 18.
At roundabouts, behave as another vehicle. Unless you are going to use the first exit on the right, do not give up the middle lanes. Even if you go slower cars will have to adapt its speed to yours.
STEP 19.
Do not hasten to the right if a car is stopped or runs slower than you on the road with one lane in each direction. Overtaking must always be performed by the left and must be clearly marked in good time ..
STEP 20.
Post utmost care in moments of intensity of traffic and do not stay between 2 lanes. No matter you are in a lane to the left, even more reason in such cases remains at the center of it. In some cases it will be better to wait a few feet to perform the maneuver.

Taking children on the bike with you

Taking children on the bike with you
I guess if you, or will you have, young children, and your passion is the bike, you may be wondering what options you have to accompany you during your outings pedaling. We've included four categories:
  • chairs to go "back" - in these children usually are seated behind you
  • take front seats - the children are seated in front, on the table
  • carts - cars that can tow with your bike
  • others - some frikadas we found out there
Chairs to go "behind"
They are the most common and there is a great variety in the market. Most often approved for children 9-22 kg (about 9 months to about 4/5 years), but there is also an option for older children.

The best thing is to look for one that can be adpater to any bicycle, well, if you change your bike, you still worth the chair (or if your kids are grown, the can "donate" to someone who can still use).

Hamax Kiss
First things first: my experience. I have a chair I Hamax Kiss , inherited from my brother, that can be used with any bike, even without luggage. The chair "joins" the box, in the tube the seat post with a "clip" that attaches with 4 screws.

Clamp the can leave installed in the box and pressing the metal you see in the picture to the left, under the lyrics, is "off" the chair. Anyway, I usually put on and take the clamp (it takes me about 5 min) each time I go to the small, because if I leave, I knocked the second bottle cage (which goes in the box under the seat).

This chair can take children from 9 months (9 kg) to 4/5 years (22 kg). On security issues: side protection, subject feet (so you do not get into the spokes) and seat belt hard enough to make an adult (impossible for a child). For what it's worth, my brother fell carrying my niece and she was not hurt.
Price: 50 €

The least favorite things are:
  • The seat belt is a little tight (or short) and to tie (or drop) the child, first, you have to remove the helmet. Note that by the time you're "up" ("down") the child's bike have to be supported by the crowbar (or wherever you can) and in any oversight, you might fall. ..
  • Do not see the child. You realize that he has fallen asleep when it takes a while silent and starts hitting you in the back headers rhythmic ... if you remove the helmet you will notice when you hear it hit the ground, ... (General to all these seats)
  •  The child is not to have too much visibility. Your back sees perfectly, but to see the landscape has to go all the time looking sideways. (General to all these seats)

Bobike Bobike Maxi or Maxi +
These two chairs, the Maxi or Maxi + , like the previous one, is to take the child back and will fit any bike with a system that connects the seat to the frame. Security measures are similar to those of the Hamax and it looks to be a little more comfortable for the child. Anyway, for some pictures I've been seeing, I think it has less side protection than others.
Price: about 80 € Maxi, Maxi + about 100 €

Römer Jockey Comfort
This chair is also to bring back and fits any bike, but beware, it only applies to tables with round tube. Pintaza has a great, absolutely safe, adjustable, reclining and so comfortable, you feel like being a dwarf again.
Price: about 105 €

GMG Yeep Maxi
Another one on the same line, this with a design a little more care. Bobike Like, if you take a look at the photos , it appears that lateral protection is not very good. Moreover, in many of the photos that appear on the web, both children and parents go without a helmet (and they better). However, the chair is much more aesthetic than others and the material they are made an absolute blast.
Price: about 100 €

Ok Baby 10 +
The last of this series, for children 9-22 kg. Very similar to the Hamax, adaptable to any bike and quite safe and secure.
Price: 50 €

Junior Bobike
If your son already weighs over 22 kg and still want to take with you on the bike (and you have the strength for it), this is your chair . Of the few to bring back that are approved in 22-32 kg. Have fewer protections than in the previous cases, but is supposed to take older children who are not going to jump off the bike and put my feet between the spokes.
Price: 140 €

Chairs to carry forward
The first time I saw this chair was in Rome. The truth is that I agreed at the time I was thinking about how to bring the dwarf me and was looking for some options. Shortly after the Hamax inherited and I could not justify to my financial Directoria buying another chair ... The weight limit for these chairs is usually around 15 kg. For me, the advantages over the above are:
  • the small can see
  • you can see the small
  • in a way, the small is protected by your own body (I have not clear whether they would be more or less secure than carrying when falling behind)
  • I think in this position destabilizes you less when moving
WeeRide Kangaroo Carrier
This is approved to carry children up to 18 kg. What I like is the mechanism for setting the saddle to the bike, I think the safest of all I've seen. It also has a padded handle that kind of applies to the child "imitate you" to guide the bike and can support your head when falling asleep.
Price: about € 40

Seats to bring in your bike for young children
It's been a couple of months I go every Sunday morning with my sister on a bicycle. Cycled up Verdecora in serving great breakfasts per euro and a half and came home giving pedals. That is, I take two months to be a bike dominguera. Globeros told me a veteran cyclist I know who is our official name, although I have not been able to explain well why.

Up to fifteen months spent all summer with the bike up and down by the people of my grandparents in Asturias, all slopes. I was with a yellow and blue Orbea he adored. Now, by chance, I wear a green mountain Orbea was a cousin of my holy and had fifteen years gathering dust. After passing by a bike shop has been fantastic.

And now my sister and I, we are more loose in cycling, walk barruntando if installed on our bikes one of those chairs that are both our girls take two years with us on these trips.

The other day I went to a sports shop and I were explaining that there are two chair models: those that fit the bike rack (that our bikes do not have, we should add) and go directly to the frame. I honestly do not know what will be recommended, there I said it did not matter. In both cases the chairs were back, but then I've seen around chairs that are placed in front, perhaps for younger children, do not know ...

And my main question for daring to try it if it's really safe. If Julia, a lombricilla restless gets moving s desequilibrarme could fall and cause.

I guess thirteen or fourteen kilos weighing and will also be felt on the slopes above, but that does not worry me especially.

Safety tips for children bicycles premiere

Safety tips for children bicycles premiere
Many children in Mexico City premiere a bicycle on these holidays. To make it safe to use that gift that promotes healthy, active transport, Bicitekas AC recommends:

To be sure, the bike must be of the right size, so we recommend doing this review before buying.

The Metropolitan Transit Regulation (RTM) gives effect to children under twelve years the right to cycle on the sidewalk. Recommend exercise this right with caution, teaching children to ALWAYS give way and stop in the presence of pedestrians.

Although the RTM grants rights and priority to pedestrians and cyclists, no child should be exposed to vehicular traffic without developing the skills to fully control your bike: balance, rolling in a straight line without zigzagear, braking without losing the control around obstacles, bicycle dismount properly are some of those skills. Recommend practice to master these skills in traffic spaces such as parks and Sunday closing.

Know and constantly use the facilities for bicycles. Children who play and exercise constantly, whether over short distances to their school and in their neighborhood, are more likely to develop the healthy habit of exercise. The bike in the corridor Ajusco Chichinautzin infrastructure is an important exercise in the middle of the forest, is free and is underutilized due to lack of promotion.

About 80 percent of all accidents in which they are involved a car and a cyclist is that the motorist "did not see" the cyclist. Therefore, we recommend dressing children with bright, clear colors and use flags on their bikes to make them more visible to the height of the car.

Wearing a helmet properly positioned and avoid loose clothing (laces, pants, skirts and scarves that can get caught in the wheels and cause falls).

Although the RTM gives priority to cyclists, this regulation is not sufficiently known or respected by the public, and their implementation is monitored by the Ministry of Public Security. The prevailing road culture still high risk to children, so we recommend caution exercised the right of children to patrol the streets.

A measure that would improve the safety of children on our streets, either as pedestrians or cyclists, is to reduce the speed of cars in the city. We call upon all parents to encourage the installation of "30 areas" in their colonies and other measures to "pacify transit" for the higher speed allowed is 30 kms. per hour, then only we can give to our children streets where they can safely walk and cycle (1).

30 areas traffic calming are an established in Europe through the European Charter for Road Safety in Urban Areas and viewed positively by the public. The result in the countries and cities in which it has been applied has been a reduction in accidents of between 15% and 20%, doubling the people who walk through the shopping area.

"The political class is afraid to boost capital's traffic calming for fear of losing votes in the next election motorists. This is absurd because only 27 percent of all trips in the city are made by car, while we are all pedestrians and all people aspire to a better life in our neighborhoods. It is important to push ahead as neighbors and citizens restrictions such motor vehicles, because with them improves the quality of life of all people, starting with our children. "Said Areli Carreon, president of the Board of Bicitekas, AC
